To Lululemon or Not to Lululemon?

So if you read more than one blog, you've probably figured out that Lululemon Athletica is quite popular amongst runners.  I'll admit it, I'm a Lululemon virgin.  I've never owned or worn a piece of Lululemon gear, and I've never even been in a store.  I have to admit, I was curious.  What's all the fuss about?  Do I really need something with that little funny logo on it to make me a "true" runner?  Is it really the most amazing gear in the world?  Do I really need some "wunder unders"?

So on my recent trip to Vancouver, BC, I drove past one of the few Lululemon Athletica outlet stores (at least in our area, the store itself is fairly rare here) in Burlington, Washington (aka the middle of nowhere).  And this seemed like a perfect opportunity to finally see what all the fuss is about.

In their defense, it was clear that they make high quality stuff.  No question about that.  It's MUCH higher quality than the cheap stuff I buy at Old Navy and Target.  Although I didn't try anything on, I would also imagine it is extremely comfortable, and probably flattering as well.  There was also a bag or two I would definitely buy if I could afford it.  I really liked their bags.

I also found a few things that I was totally interested in.  This skirt was on sale for $29 and I probably would have bought it if they hadn't only had one in stock and it was an XXL.  I love ruffles.

I totally dug this tank and the material seemed super comfortable.  I loved the criss-cross racerback and the straps were thick and well-made.  But it was $39.  That's a bit much for a tank-top in my book.

I also liked this beauty of a skirt.  Unfortunately they didn't have my size in this either.  I was really hoping to get a skirt but they didn't have many - the ones they had were obscure sizes.

So. Let's talk.  Yes, their stuff was cute and yes it seemed well-made and high quality.  But.  You knew that was coming right?  But despite all this, I just can't imagine shelling out $70 for a pair of workout pants, and those were the ones at the OUTLET STORE.  I think I got my last pair of running capri tights (similar in style) for $9 on the clearance rack at Old Navy.  The pair before that I got at JC Penny for $5 after a $10 off coupon.  You get my drift.  This store is not for me.  Now, if someone wanted to give me a shopping spree to Lululemon, I'm sure I would quickly change my tune.  There was lots of stuff that was cute that you wouldn't have to twist my arm very hard to wear.  And the bags.  The bags were freaking adorable.  But they were also $99.  So there's that.  When it comes down to wearing Lululemon or buying a race entry, I think you know where my loyalties lie.  Which is why I constantly look like a scrub.

I hope you don't hate me now, I'm not trying to hate on Lululemon!  Who will never come back to my blog because of this post?!

What do you really think about Lululemon?  Yay or nay?  What do you have from there that you love?  Is the stuff really worth the price?  So comfortable?  Convince me!

I have to admit I am a bit anti-Lulu... There sizing is not so friendly to people on the larger side of normal and yeah, they are a bit heavy on the back pocket. I agree that the clothes are good quality and cute-to-boot but at the end of the day, if I am going to be sweating my booty off in them, I don't want to be paying big dollars for them :)
I love Target for my workout gear

I have that last skirt and LOVE it! I agree their stuff is pricey. I don't own a ton of their stuff for that reason, and almost all of it that i do own i got on a huge discount. Their stuff lasts and lasts, so i'm willing to pay a little more, but sometimes i have to draw the line. The blue/aqua running zip up I'm always wearing on cold runs is from there and was oringially 108 which i would never, ever pay but was on sale for $50 and is so comfy and warm that I definitely would buy one again at that price. The only problem is their sales are so random and on random sizes. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with them, so I can relate!
My recent post I'm taking a big ol leap of faith...
I know people think Lululemon is expensive, but you are paying for GREAT quality clothing. Everything I have bought from Lulu has lasted over five years or more (and that says a lot because I probably wear everything at least 3 times a week).

If money were no object, I'd probably blow some serious dough on lululemon, especially their skirts- they're so cute! But, I have never tried one on, and probably never will, since I'm a bargain hunter on a very small budget. I tend to shop RunningWarehouse's website since they have free 2 day shipping (both ways!), and their liquidation pages mean I Can buy quality running gear at a price that won't leave me feeling afraid to get it dirty! And, I agree, I'd rather pay a race entry than buy a skirt!
I love that you posted this! I've never been to Lulu either which I know is practically unheard of :) There is one here in Boulder though, and I made a deal with myself-- if I do okay at the half on Sunday, I'm gonna check out Lulu and see what the hype is about. Not sure I'll be a convert though!
Big BIG news on my blog today! You'll want to know...go look!

I can't imagine ever shopping at Lululemon! I am much too cheap. In fact, I have been thinking about sewing some of my own running stuff so that I can have some cuter stuff that's not 1 bajillion dollars!
I've never been to Lululemon and hadn't heard of them until I saw some of their stuff on Pinterest. I looked at their website and while I'm willing to shell out extra for quality stuff, holy moly that stuff is expensive....and I couldn't find anything I loved enough to justify a splurge...so for now a Lululemon virgin I will stay.

I have never bought anything from Lululemon. There used to be a store 5 minutes from my house, but it closed down. I guess not enough people wanted to shell out $99 for a shirt. I thought their things were cute, but too expensive. I have some running capris that I bought at Target for $15 probably over 5 years ago that I wear at least twice a week that still look and feel great. I am with you:)

i will admit it. i have a serious lulu addiction. i pretend like i have tons of money but i don’t. luckily a lot of my clothes have been gifts, giftcards or “rewards” (PRs, races completed, etc) to myself. and yes, i do believe the clothes look and feel that good. i have had my tank tops for over 2 years and they still look, smell, and feel like new. my old nike stuff was thrown out after a year or less (it seems to hold odor-ewww). so i am on the crazy lulu train. but i do put myself on restriction. i’m currently on it right now. :)
I have that first skirt pictured but in black. I might be wearing it to my half marathon this weekend not sure yet.

I own 2 of their skirts and one jacket. I love each and every one. They are some of the most comfortable running clothes I own. They are very expensive though and if I had to chose between a race entry or Lulu I would chose the race entry of course.
The first skirt I ever got, that still looks brand new and I get tons of compliments on, I bought after I ran my first marathon in 2010 as a treat to myself. I got the ruffled skirt last year cause it was on sale and then the jacket earlier this year cause I needed one and I knew the quality is really good that I won't have to buy another one for a few years. So my trend seems to be that I get one of their times once a year haha.

I really love the Lulu stuff I own (which I've purchased on mega sale from the outlet - thankfully we have one!), but it's not an every day kinda purchase. The stuff is comfy, it holds up well, and it fits me like nothing else does. I typically buy my stuff at Target (C9 for LIFE!), but will splurge every now and then!

I've never been to a Lulu store since I usually shop online to see prices before I go see it in person. Maybe I'm being cheap, but I can't see spending that much on a tank top either. I prefer to splurge on my running shoes. If I really loved something at a store, I'd have to have a really good reason to justify a big splurge like that. I guess I'm a Target girl too :)
To answer your question....here's a post I wrote a while back....

;)

Really though, totes agree on it being UBER expensive; but as many others have said, it lasts. I know that the newest items have been going under some scrutiny (colors running, etc) but all the pieces I have still look (and perform) as if they were brand new.

I have yet to buy anything from lulu but I got the run inspire crops for Christmas from my sister. LOVE them. They are more comfortable than ANY pair of target pants I own. Even more than my expensive Craft crops. They also hide the muffin top well. They do not smell and the quality is superior. I will pay more and have less clothes to have better ones. I am also using them as a reward. When I hit my next weight loss goal, i'm getting something new from Lulu.

The price their stuff is ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. And more than that, I think their gear is divisive. I understand that's a strong statement to make about clothing, but there's an air of exclusivity - a "look what I have that most people can't afford" - that makes me want to distance myself from that group. And also, my large a$$ doesn't fit in that tiny sh*t.
I like Lulu - I have a couple of pairs of pants from their and they have lasted longer then any of my other stuff. I have a bag from there that I got for Christmas and I love it.

I am starting to fall inm love with Zella stuff from Nordstroms that I heard is designed by an old Lulu designer.
My recent post Friday Five
I know it's expensive, but I honestly feel like it is worth every penny. Their stuff lasts forever, it looks good, it stands up to the sweatiest and longest of runs and workouts. It is designed with the athlete in mind as much as it is designed for the feminine in mind. As a busy mom of three, oftentimes I am wearing my workout clothes all day. I run early in the morning, come home and take care of my kids right away and don't shower til much later in the day (don't judge!). I might not smell so good, but I at least feel somewhat cute and put together which just makes me feel better about myself! And as for the wunder unders - they are amazing. I wear them all the time - not just for exercise. They are really high quality, comfortable black leggings with the right outfit! I would pay that much for a good pair of jeans that I would wear all the time.
This past year I became a run ambassador for the company, and I have to say that I love what the company stands for. their manifesto completely rocks -- http://www.lululemon.com/about/manifesto if you haven't read it you should check it out!
all of this said, i do agree that it is pricey, but i also feel like it's worth it :o) i have tried a lot of the stuff they make and while it's for sure NOT all for me - there are several things that I am so thankful to have for my running.
oh and this post doesn't make me mad! i think it is great to have an open discussion about stuff like this!! :o)

I was anti-lulu until I tried it. I reluctantly shelled out the $69 for a pair of outlet capris 5 yrs ago. They still look brand new and thus, I am a believer. I don't like shelling out the dollars, but I also don't like buying cheap stuff that I have to replace all the time. One good lulu item will outlast 10 of the cheaper ones. I have never ever been disappointed by a piece of lulu clothing and will continue to save up and buy things as I need them. Their running gear gets better and better as time goes on and yes I paid $178 for a running rain jacket, but that jacket feels like it was designed for my body specifically. So many features, such a good fit. I run because I can and because it is important to me, therefore, I want to be in the best and most comfortable clothes I can be. Running is hard and I don't want it to be harder because I'm wearing cheap clothes. You don't need their clothes to be a good runner, but if you can, Lulu is definitely worth the price, once you take the plunge. You just have to close your eyes and jump.

right now, its no lululemon for me. I don't care if its that great of quality, its just something i can wrap my head around in terms of spending THAT much money
My recent post Have you ever been in love?
I bought an outfit there when I first started running. And I have to admit, it is heaven to run in!! So in gearing up to run a half this weekend, I had been wanting to buy their pace setter run skirt. I went to Vegas last weekend and decided that all of my winnings would buy me that skirt, since I couldn't have made the excuse to buy it other wise. So I was lucky enough to keep some money after the trip and bought an outfit to wear this weekend...besides the fact that the skirt has ruffles and is SO cute. It's just great material! I won't be buying anything like that again soon. but I DO LOVE it there!! I would work there in a heart beat, too!

I'm sure its all awesome stuff and made well, but sometimes I do think there is just a hype over how much it costs. My capri's from Old Navy and Target are fine...they are comfortable and cute, they just don't have the fancy symbol on them. Its just like any other "fancy" brand. I'm sure its quality and made well but since its exclusive b/c of the price, that makes it more desirable. I'm totes fine without it, they don't make anything over a size 12 either, which is kind of a turn off to me as well. Most places go to at least 16 b/c that is what average people wear. Either way, if someone wanted to give me $500 bucks to spend there, I'm sure I could, but I'm not going to loose any sleep over not having any of their stuff either. And I agree, the bags are SUPER cute!! :)

I've never been to Lululemon! We do have a store here, I think, but I've never been. I like the way that some of their clothes look but I can't afford the price. I like My Target and Old Navy workout clothes! I do get some of my stuff from Dick's Sporting Goods too.

If someone gave me a giftcard though I wouldn't turn it down :)
My recent post Tips for Surviving a Running Relay
No for me
1. too expensive. cannot justify spending all that money for that.
2. it is not for tall people like me. (I am 5'11" ). to get a little lenght I would have to go to sizes that are too big for me.
My recent post Not Racing the Race
Oh girl, I feel exactly the same way about lululemon! Everything is so awesome but I just can't justify spending so much money on something that's main purpose is to get sweaty.

There is some interesting anit-lulu stuff flying around out there. I won a shopping spree to lulu a few months ago and was hard pressed to find something that fit well. I ended up with 2 sweatshirts, each of which were over $100!!!!! Maybe their stuff is 'worth it' for rich people or people with different priorities, but I think lulu is a ton o' hype. Paying full price for their stuff out of pocket is nuts for the average person. I wrote a post about my $100 dollar sweatshirts a couple of months ago and got interesting feedback too :)
